Limits to Ionization-parameter Mapping as a Diagnostic of Hii Region Optical Depth

Abstract We employ ionization-parameter mapping (IPM) to infer the optical depth of H ii regions in northern half M33. construct [O iii ] λ 5007/[O 3727 and 5007/[S 6724 ratio maps from narrowband images continuum-subtracted this way, which we classify by ionizing radiation, based on their ionization structure. This method works relatively well low-metallicity regime, 12 + log ( O stretchy="true">/ mathvariant="normal">H stretchy="false">) ≤ 8.4 , where 4959, 5007 is strong. However, at higher metallicities, breaks down due strong dependence emission lines nebular temperature. Thus, although O ++ may be present metal-rich regions, these commonly used do not serve as a useful indicator its presence, hence state. In addition, IPM diagnostic limited spatial resolution. also report region highly excited extending over an area ∼1 kpc across luminosity 4.9 ± 1.5 × 10 38 erg s −1 several times than budget any potential sources portion galaxy.
